"The Wahine Disaster" - TVNZ Documentary CG Highlights

The Wahine disaster is New Zealand's worst maritime disaster to date. The documentary was produced by Mr. Smith Television and aired on TVNZ in 2008. These graphics are shown pre-treatment (an age and noise pass was later added to match other film footage in the documentary).

The clips show with incredible realism the sea conditions faced by the Wahine as she entered the harbour. Painstaking measures were taken to emulate the effects of Hurricane Giselle which produced wind gusts reaching 276 kilometres an hour and massive sea swells.

The team (with Jason Bell and Sam Scott of Virtual Spectator) modelled the ship from detailed reference and gathered weather data from NIWA. They read eyewitness accounts and took expertise from former Cook Strait ferry master Captain John Brown. Those who lived through the disaster have commended the team on capturing the conditions very well.
